Lee A. Tregurtha

Caught this Great Lakes Freighter going thru the Straits of Mackinac (between upper and lower Michigan). On the other side of our boat was the Mackinac Bridge. Which, if you have never seen it, is amazing. (I think it is like the second or third largest suspension bridge in the world) These pictures (taken within seconds of each other) last spring, show the cloudy weather in the east (boat) giving way to the clear blue skies in the west (bridge). To see some great pics of this bridge go to this link and click on photo galleries. http://www.mackinacbridge.org/

I've only been on the Golden Gate bridge. Wow--that one looks much longer.

Well, heres the deal, Lene'. The Golden Gate has a total length of 1.7 miles. The Mackinac is 5 miles.
BUT .....the bridges are measured by the portion of the bridge that is actually suspended. Taking that into consideration the Golden Gate beats out the Mighty Mac by a mere 300 feet. No matter, they are both engineering and architectural marvels.

That's interesting. I would have never guessed that they'd be measured that way. Thanks for the follow up. Yes, I agree--marvels.
